Tempe Council Spygate Update
By Ron Tapscott | October 28, 2023
AZ’s attorney general is looking into whether the City of Tempe “used taxpayer money to spy on its citizens” who opposed a developer’s bid to build a hockey arena and entertainment complex on Tempe Town Lake, reported CBS-5 and the AZ Republic. This city-contracted surveillance operation raises serious issues about legality, transparency, and democracy in our City, and our residents deserve a full accounting.
This alarming news came forward as a result of public records requests by Tempe1st and discussions with whistleblowers. As further information becomes available, we will send out additional notifications.
But we need your help
Tempe1st is an all-volunteer organization, committed to informing you and your neighbors about what’s happening in our City. To do so, we need to maintain a website, engage social media, and produce a timely newsletter, all of which come with costs. Our goal is to raise $10,000 for ongoing expenses, and we can’t do this without you.
You helped us turn the tide in our David vs. Goliath win in May. With your financial help, we were able to counter the Coyotes million-dollar messaging machine and win the Special Election. But the fight for a livable city and a transparent and responsible city government continues. The General Plan 2050, allocation of funding for social services, traffic congestion, protection of neighborhoods, and other critical issues need to be addressed by residents and not decided by developers who often don’t live in our city.
