Where did the 5 candidates currently running for City Council seats stand on the hockey arena deal—the proposal that Tempe voters soundly rejected last May?
Randy Keating voted to approve the deal. He repeatedly posted on social media in support of the proposal and appeared on the Coyote’s podcasts and also in ads paid for by Tempe Wins, the PAC that ran a campaign to approve the deal.
Doreen Garlid voted to approve the deal.
Nikki Amberg initially supported the deal. Amberg hosted a party for the pro-arena Tempe Wins campaign in her home. Recently, she’s been heard saying the city should have engaged more with residents before their unanimous vote in favor of the deal.
David Lucier openly opposed the deal as seen in this Facebook video.
Dr. Hugo Tapia voted NO on Props 301, 302 & 303, opposing the deal.
On February 10th, the Arizona Republic ran an interview with the five candidates. One of the questions asked was:
The Arizona Coyotes’ proposal to build a $2.1 billion NHL arena and entertainment district was defeated by voters. Did you support the plan during the May election? And what do you think could be done with that parcel now?
